Did you know a horse's sweat patterns reveal valuable insights into their muscle health? Post-exercise sweat accumulates on hair directly above engaged muscles, often leaving a "crushed velvet" or swirling appearance. Ideally, sweat should appear on the back, neck, croup (upper hindquarters) and abdomen. When hair appears ruffled instead of smooth, it can indicate muscle bracing or improper use. Ruffled hair with sweat indicates the horse is bracing or using the muscle incorrectly, as the hair does not follow the muscle fibres’ direction. Conversely, smooth, sweaty hair suggests the horse is using the muscle correctly.
